A father and his two children died on Friday in a boat accident near Wuya community in Mokwa local government area of Niger state, Daily Trust learnt on Saturday.
Malam Yahaya Hamza and his two children were returning to their community in Edati local government area from part of Mokwa Council when their boat capsized on River Kaduna at a point in Wuya along Bida-Mokwa road.
The incident, which happened at about 12pm, was attributed to flood wave occasioned by rainfall which occurred at the early hours of the day.
“The river was a bit turbulent because of flood water which always find their way through various channels into the river. We saw them battling to regain control but the current was much,” a resident of Wuya, Malam Abdullahi Na-Ali explained.
He said divers were only able to recovered their corpses, which were since buried in Edati local government area on the day of the accident.
The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Inga said the agency received the report of the accident on Friday.
He said three people died while the boat peddler survived in the accident, adding that it’s a recurring decimal this time of the year.
Daily Trust reports that the Friday incident brought the number of boat mishaps since the rain intensifies to three across the state with 24 deaths.
In July, 15 people lost their lives in a single accident in Borgu local government area while returning from Warrah market, a border community in Ngaski local government area of Kebbi State to Sabo Yumu.
Also, six people died when their boat capsized on their way to the farm in Old Awuru, Fakun district from Farasawa community, all in Borgu local government area in June.
