Judicial Panel recommends payment of N511m to victims of police brutality

He promised that the state government will study the report with a view to implementing its recommendations.

The Abia State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality, Extrajudicial Killings and other Related Matters has submitted a five-volume report to the Governor, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, with a recommendation that over N511m be paid to victims of police brutality and inhuman treatment.

Receiving the report, the governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Chris Ezem, commended the panel for rendering historic and selfless services to their fatherland.

He promised that the state government will study the report with a view to implementing its recommendations.

The governor stressed that the report would guide the public on how best to relate with the police and other security agencies, reiterating that the security institutions need the support and cooperation of the citizens in order to excel in their duties.

The Chairman of the Judicial Panel, a retired Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Sunday Imo, said the panel received 86 petitions, with 46 going through full hearing while the remaining cases were dismissed or struck out.
