Students were not left out at the just concluded science and technology exhibition as they showcased their creative and innovative minds. Some of them interviewed by Daily Trust were three JSS3 students of Gwagwalada Junior Secondary School, Abuja.
At the event, Grace Hassan, Umeh Chinyere Francisca and Miracle Harrison showcased what they called Multipurpose Grain Threshing Machine.

Grace Hassan, who spoke first on how the idea of the machine was conceived, said: “We were discussing amongst ourselves about agriculture and threshing of maize and I told them we could actually make a machine that will help farmers nowadays because food is actually essential.
“What actually inspired us was that we noticed that farmers nowadays use their hands in threshing corn seed, they also use stick in threshing. So, we decided to make a machine that will make it easier for them, and they won’t spend much money in importing such machines. It will reduce the cost of importing as well as cost of labor because I’m sure they hire people to help them in threshing their grains. To use this machine is easy; just switch on the engine and put the corn cob,” she said.
She said it took them four days to come up with it—one day for designing and three days for the whole construction.
Speaking on the materials used for the machine she stated that they got some of the irons from broken chairs in their schools. Also, they contributed to buy the engine and tires with the help of the school management.
Umeh Chinyere Francisca said “My dream about this machine is for it to help the government and farmers so that they will not be stressed. It will make their work easier and faster and reduce food scarcity and costs because in Nigeria. I believe food is costly because of the time and energy used to produce them but with this machine, food prices will reduce.”
