Journalists tasked on storytelling

Media practitioners have been urged to step out of their comfort zones and adopt modern storytelling techniques in adding value to the lives of Nigerians.

The founder/director of The Journalism Clinic, Taiwo Obe, made this known at a virtual workshop to commemorate the 55th birthday of Mr. Hakeem Bello, special adviser on communications to the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola

He said gone were the days journalists specialised in either print or broadcast media, adding, “With digital technology, mobile telephony and mobile access, the lines (of specialisation in an aspect of journalism) are now blurring. Describing yourself as a print or broadcast journalist now seems archaic,” he said.

He urged media practitioners to embrace new storytelling techniques to remain relevant.

Another participant and veteran journalist, Gani Kayode Balogun said, “The act of storytelling has always been with us, but to do it digitally in a modern way requires a certain level of language. A lot of people have good stories but they neither have the language, skills nor words to do it.”

Hakeem Bello commended the participants and urged them to implement lessons from the workshop.
