Jos unrest: Varsity authorities find missing student

The management of University of Jos said it has found the missing 100 Level Psychology Student, Ashoms Galadima whose whereabouts was earlier said to be unknown, following the skirmishes which erupted in Jos, the Plateau State capital and lasted for days.

In a statement by the Principal Assistant Registrar/ Information and Publications Officer of the institution, Abdullahi Abdullahi, the school said the student was found in the custody of personnel of the Special Task Force (STF) Operation Safe Haven.

The statement said Galadima was found in good health and has since been reunited with members of his family, and that members of the public should disregard any other rumours about his disappearance.

It said the university authorities has put all measures in place to safeguard the lives and property of members of the university community especially staff and students, and that towards this end the security has been beefed up at the various campuses and students hostels to forestall any breach.

Giving an update of the security situation in the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seddi Sebastian Maimako appreciated the efforts of the Plateau State Government, Plateau State Police Command and other security agencies for their prompt response to the university’s request for the deployment of additional security personnel at various strategic locations within the school.

The Vice-Chancellor particularly commended the State Executive Governor, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong, for visiting the campuses and hostels in the school to personally assess the situation on the ground. The school thank the governor also for approving the distribution of food supplies and other essential commodities to students currently residing in the hostels.

Similarly the state Police Commissioner, Undie Adie, also approved, in addition to other security agencies, the deployment of a detachment of Mobile Policemen to provide security cover to the university until calm is fully restored,” the statement partly read.

It said also that the President of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the school, Fwangshak Pantu has been provided with the mobile phone number of the Team Leader of the Policemen stationed at the hostels for ease of communication, and therefore called on all parents and guardians whose wards are residing within the university premises to keep their minds at rest as the students’ security will not be compromised for any reason.

It noted that the SUG has appealed to the Federal Government to consider the building of a perimeter fence around the university as a matter of priority to improve the security on campus.

The statement further appealed to members of the public to be wary of false information that are usually circulated especially on the social media, and to confirm all information about the university from its website www.unijos.edu.ng, the Campus Radio Station UJ FM 96.1 and other authentic sources.

Meanwhile, Professor Maimako has expressed regret over the disturbances that claimed the life of a student on campus with another reported missing and some others injured. He prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the deceased student and quick recovery for the injured.
