Jos residents buy cement more despite price increase in product

Despite the recent hike in the price of cement, patronage for the commodity is rising among the residents of Jos, Benue/Plateau Trust investigation discovered.

It would be recalled that cement companies in Nigeria recently increased price of each bag by N300.

Our correspondent, who visited some selling pints in Jos on Tuesday, discovered that there is a rise in the purchase of the commodity compared to weeks before the hike in the price.

Ibrahim Ahmad Bala, a dealer and retailer of cement on Bauchi Junction in Jos, told our correspondent that he sold more products  compared to some few weeks ago. He attributed the rise to the advent of the dry season when people resume construction.

He said: “Despite the increase, people buy even more than in the last two months. This is so because it is believed that they have money with them now after harvesting and selling their produce.

“Before the increase, the company price per bag was N3060, but now is N3390. Now, at the retail price, we sell it at the rate of 3650. So, whatever the company add is what the final consumer would add on the old price, “ he added.

Bala hoped that distributors of the product would hike the price as it will discourage people from buying.
