Supporters of former President Goodluck Jonathan said they have kicked off grassroots mobilisation of voters for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the South South and South East geo-political zones.

They said the move was to promote national unity, equity, fairness and justice.

The supporters under the aegis of Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPDN) had, prior to the presidential primary this year, urged Jonathan to run on the platform of the APC.

It also involved prominent southern leaders to prevail on Jonathan to join the race, but the ex-president later declined.

Speaking during the flag-off of the campaign in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, the national secretary of the coalition, Francis Okereke Wainwei, said they resolved to support Tinubu because the Tinubu/Shettima ticket would tackle the socioeconomic and security challenges bedeviling the nation if given the mandate.

Wainwei said they have equally thrown their weight behind the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

“In order to ensure that a southern president is elected in 2023, we hereby call on all our members and people of the South East and the South South zones to massively vote for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for president in 2023.
