President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday summoned an emergency meeting with service chiefs.
Jonathan, who disclosed this yesterday while presiding over the decoration of 48 newly promoted Major Generals in the Army, Navy and Air Force at the Command Officers’ Mess, Asokoro, Abuja, said the meeting was in response to Thursday’s attacks on Bama, Borno State, by suspected Boko Haram members.
He decried that the country was undergoing a very challenging time, noting that all hands must be on deck to protect lives and property.
The president charged the decorated officers to go the extra mile to justify their promotions by helping to enhance the nation’s security.
According to him, unless the armed forces are able to protect lives and property of all Nigerians, the reputation of the country will continue to go down.
“It’s a very challenging moment. I remember when I came in, I had a meeting with the Service Chiefs and Inspector General of a Police because of what happened in Bama yesterday. It’s a very challenging period in this country and we expected, as we say that those who more is given, more is expected. For those of you who have been so decorated as full two-star generals, we expect that you’ll bring your experience to bear.
“Now that we are now faced with the challenge that we never expected, we are being overwhelmed in some scenes, some incidents but we usually get over it. I will work with you to make sure that you are in position to defend our nation, to protect lives and property and to make sure that our environment is peaceful and that Nigerians can move freely from one part of the country to the other without being afraid that somebody will point the trigger at them,” he said.
Twenty seven army officers, 15 from the Air Force officers and six naval officers were decorated at the event in addition to two others decorated at an earlier event.
