Jonathan still my president – Buhari

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday that he will continue to respect the views of outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan until he is sworn-in as president on May 29. He made the remarks at the end of his meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General special envoys to West and Central Africa, Dr. Mohammad Ibn Chambas and Prof. Abdoulaye Bathily respectively at his private office in Kaduna.
Jonathan had earlier met with the envoys in Abuja where he said Nigeria does not need UN troops in the ongoing war against terror.
The president-elect, who was fielding questions from journalists on whether or not he had contrary views to those of the outgoing president, said: “Jonathan is still the president until May 29; he has spoken, I won’t oppose his views and I would rather keep my mouth shut.”
Buhari said the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon had together with the leaders of US and Europe maintained contact with President Jonathan during the elections and ensured that he effectively monitored the elections.
The UN envoy to West Africa, Mr. Chambas said the essence of the visit was to discuss the Boko Haram insurgency and how to end it. He said the visit was also to convey the deep admiration of the Secretary-General and the UN system to president-elect and Nigerians “for the conduct of elections, which has set a model for other African countries. The Secretary General is pleased with the way President Jonathan and president-elect Buhari handled the outcome of the election.”
