Speaking to Sunday Trust yesterday in Abuja, Shinkafi, a PDP member from Zamfara State lamented that the PDP was on the brink of annihilation unless Jonathan, as leader of the party, did  something drastic to save it. Shinkafi viewed the situation in the PDP as bad as deserving its flag to be flown half-mast at its headquarters in Abuja.
“It is with heavy heart that I stand here to talk about this negative development in our political party. Why? It is bad losing 37 federal legislators, not to talk of many associates, political allies and ordinary supporters. We have come a long way in the struggle to have a big PDP that we all dreamt of. It is an unfortunate and sad development for us true and loyal members of the PDP,” Shinkafi regretted.
“The president, as leader of the party, should look at every member of the PDP as his subject. He is supposed to be the pilot of the party. It is unfortunate that these things are happening under his leadership. There is a lot he can do to salvage the situation,” the lawmaker suggested.
The legislator believed it wasn’t late for the party’s leadership to salvage it from collapse. “We still have other members to work on to avoid further defection. There are some people even within the opposition who are feeling aggrieved with their parties. But to woo them, we have to work on putting our own house in order, otherwise we can’t begin to talk of wooing other members in other political parties to join us.”
He warned that if the defection trend continues, the PDP faces a threat of disintegration as the 2015 general elections draw near.
“Whichever PDP member says there is no problem in the party does not mean well for it and for our democracy. There is truly a problem and something very urgent must be done about it before it is too late,” he stated.
