Nigerian international John Obi Mikel has cancelled his contract with Chinese Super League club Tianjin Teda.

This will see the former Chelsea midfielder leave Tianjin with more than a year of his current deal still left to run.

The Super Eagles captain has not travelled with the Tianjin Teda first team to Spain for pre-season training camp, as he is negotiating his departure from the club.

In an interview with Tianjin TV Sports New Vision, Mikel said: “I broke the contract with the club, which means I will leave Teda. As for my next stop, I am not sure yet, maybe I will return to Europe, maybe stay in China.

“Anyway, I would like to wish the Teda team good luck next season.”

Mikel joined the CSL club in January 2017, after leaving Chelsea on a free transfer. In his two years in the Chinese top flight, the Nigerian made 31 appearances and chipped in with three goals and three assists.

Mikel performed strongly for Tianjin in his first season and a half at the club, but he has struggled with injuries since representing Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
