The Jigawa State Government has named a Junior Secondary School in Sule Tankarkar after a female singer, Salmai Albasu in appreciation of her efforts in promoting education, using music.

The gesture was announced by the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Lawan Yunusa Danzomo during a special award presentation ceremony in her honour by Green Horizon, a Kano-based group of development professionals in the community at the weekend.

Managing director of Green Horizon Mrs. Aisha Ado Abdullahi also said the singer was honoured for her positive contributions in promoting education more than 50 years ago, at a time when there was societal resistance to western education, especially in northern Nigeria.
