Jigawa deputy gov picks APC senatorial ticket

Jigawa State deputy governor, Barrister Ibrahim Hadejia, has won the Jigawa Northeast All Progressive Party (APC)’s Senatorial District primary election after polling 1,863 votes.

The police had to use tear gas to disperse the supporters of the contenders after an attempt to disrupt the exercise that started late at around 5:30 pm on Wednesday.

The altercation halted the exercise for about four hours which resumed after an emergency meeting between the contenders and the security agencies was held in Hadejia, the venue of the election.

The deputy speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Ahmed Garba aka MK, who is the major opponent to the deputy governor, was reported to have pulled out from the race in protest.

The third contender in the race, Hussaini Mohammed alias Rally, had announced his decision to withdraw from the race before the commencement of the election though, it is not yet clear what the reason for his withdrawal was.

Announcing the result, the returning officer of the election in Jigawa State, Bello Ibrahim, said Garba scored 142 votes while Mohammed, who did not participated in the race secured 44 votes.

According to him, a total of 2,063 votes were cast while 13 were declared invalid.

Meanwhile, the exercise is still on going in Jigawa central and North west senatorial districts.
