The Kaduna State chapter of the Council of Imams and Ulama has said the announcement by Donalt Trump of the regognision of Jerusalem as capital of Israel did not come as a surprise.
The council said the US and its allies have been playing double standards in mediating the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.
President Trump had recently announced that the US would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and that he would move the American embassy there once a location was secured.
The president argued that since 1995, when Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act, his predecessors had delayed implementing the Act because of fears that it would harm efforts to achieve a peace agreement in the Middle East.
However, the council in a press release signed by its Chairman and Secretary General, Shaykh Usman Abubakar Babantine and Ustaz Yusuf Yakubu Arrigasiyyu respectively, condmened the action and assured that sooner or later the occupation of Palestinian lands would become history.
