As such, the chairman implored Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of the 36 states of the country to work within the legal framework so as to be immune from such attacks.
Jega was speaking yesterday Abuja while declaring open a quarterly consultative meeting with RECs as part of the preparation for the 2015 elections.
“There is no doubt that as we inch closer to the 2015, the workload on us increases, the pressure increases. We come under all sorts of attacks and challenges from the gladiators of political arena,” Jega lamented.
However, the INEC chairman acknowledged that “the key challenge for all of us is to remain focused on what we need to do and to ensure that under no circumstances we remain sincere and impartial and work within the legal framework for the discharge of our responsibilities.”
Aparently referring to the position of the commission in the Anambra PDP logjam, INEC chairman said, “It is natural and particularly in the kind of environment that we work, we will not please everybody. If we take a decision and one side is happy, the other side will not be happy and in our own territory, when people are not happy, they morally lose their senses and they do all sorts of things, all sorts of insults. So that’s the nature of our political terrain. We hope it will improve.”
He reminded the participants of the challenges that lie in the various states and local governments stressing that the commission is poised to surmounting them despite its present financial constraints.
The issues to discuss at the INEC meeting with RECs, Jega stated, were those relating to what to do in preparation towards the 2015 elections.
He then charged the RECs to continue to make the sacrifices that will ensure Nigeria’s electoral process continues to get the confidence and trust of Nigerians as a way of deepening the democracy of the country.
