The Fagachin Zazzau, Alhaji Muhammad Abbas, one of the kingmakers contesting the selection process that produced Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli as emir, has withdrawn the services of his counsel, Dr Onyechi Ikpeazu.

Abbas, who is the 7th defendant in the matter, with suit no. KDH/Z/253/2020, announced the termination of the services of his counsel through a WhatsApp message, which was read in court by Albert Akaahs at the resumed sitting yesterday in Kaduna.

According to the former counsel to Fagachin Zazzau, “In exercise of our client’s constitutional right to any counsel of his choice, the 7th defendant thereby immediately terminates our brief on his counsel with this message. He urged the court to discharge Dr Ikpeazu and other lawyers from his chamber from representing the 7th defendant in this suit.”

The presiding judge, Justice Kabiru Dabo, granted the application.

Counsel to Iyan Zazzau, Alhaji Bashar Aminu, who is the plaintiff in the matter, Yunus Ustaz Usman, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said there were two applications for enlargement of time on two processes for Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli (the 11th defendant).

However, counsel to El-Rufai did not object to the application, but asked that they be made available for him after the sitting.

Plaintiff and defence counsels unanimously urged the court for a new date to allow the 7th defendant to be heard.

Justice Kabiru Dabo granted the prayer and adjourned the matter to January 13 and 14, 2020 for adoption of written addresses.
