Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello: If wishes were horses…

Iyabo had reportedly written the Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, over death threats she had received. She did not stop at that. In her smartness, she had also, according to reports, accused the IG of not swinging into action over the matter.

She was quoted to have lamented: “I wrote them a few months ago and I also wrote a police report then, but nothing has been done”.

Why has Iyabo developed cold feet over the alleged death threats? She probably wants to forestall a re-occurrence of her nasty experience of 2003 when five people inside her car were shot dead at Ifo, Ogun State.

Who are those actually hunting for Iyabo’s life? The letter by her counsel, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) read in part: “For a while, our client has been receiving death threats from anonymous sources. She however, did not raise alarm to these series of death threats before now since she could not trace same to anyone or group of persons. In recent times however, series of information at our client disposal have revealed that some close aides of Governor Gbenga Daniel are holding regular meetings and consultations on how to eliminate our client.

“It is disheartening that some hoodlums could become so audacious to be hunting for the life of an incumbent senator of this great country and still boast openly with impunity. What then would be the fate of the ordinary good citizens of this country who may have any sort of differences with these hoodlums?”

If truly Okiro had refused to act, as Iyabo had alleged, she need be reminded that here is a country where being a first daughter guarantees more protection than being a senator. At least, when her father held sway as President of the country, the police would not hesitate to swing into full action even when a mosquito dared threaten her life. How she wishes her daddy were still in charge!
