It’s possible to modernise policing in Nigeria – Senate C’ttee Chair

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Abdulhamid Mallam-Madori Ahmed, has said that it is possible completely overhaul the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the lead security agency in internal security, and thereafter fulfil its mandate of entrenching civil authority.

The senator, who stated this in Abuja while fielding questions from journalists, said his committee was working towards putting together, a policy document that once articulated by the Senate as a whole, would be handed over to the executive branch to revitalise the nation’s police force.

Sen. Ahmed stressed the need to engage men and women of the force in training and capacity-building, in an equipped institutions, in order to give them the expertise required to carry out the task of modern policing.

The lawmaker said many infrastructures on ground in police training institutions are dilapidated, arguing that there was a need to revitalise them on time.

Analysing a comment made by Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, on poor condition of police institutions and training centres across the country, Senator Ahmed said the police would perform better if well-funded.

“We are hereby calling for enough funds in the budgetary allocation of the police, to update the police services as number one security outfit to maintain internal security of the country.

“The exemplary valour and expertise of Nigeria’s police, that is comparable internationally, instils confidence that brighter days lie just beyond the horizon if well-funded,” the lawmaker said.

He noted that the senate committee on police affairs has been unequivocal about its resolve to transform the Nigeria Police Force into “a modern, professional institution that mirrors the aspirations and values” of the nation.

The lawmaker added, “The transformation we seek must transcend mere policy, it requires a fundamental overhaul of our institutional mentality of neglecting the welfare of the men of the force.”

The Jigawa State-born politician said this would ensure that police officers are equipped with the knowledge, skills, values, and expertise required to tackle the complex challenges of modern policing, while assuring that the government would provide enough funds to upgrade services that will enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency of the force

According to him, “These endeavours will be supported by suitable measures to enhance the status of our officers and personnel both during their service and after retirement.”
