It’s impossible to control every aspect of production – Motunrayo Adeoye

Motunrayo Adeoye is a co-producer of one of Nollywood’s recent blockbusters, Blacksmith (Alagbede). In this interview with Weekend Magazine, Adeoye shares her journey behind the creation of “Blacksmith (Alagbede),” and insights into her life and duties as an executive producer.

Can you describe a typical day in your role as an executive producer?

SPONSOR AD

A typical day in my role begins with securing funding from my investments to ensure an adequate budget for my movie production. Secondly, overseeing the stage-by-stage process of the production, from script writing to the hiring process of the cast and crews, making sure they are fair and adequate. Also, setting a budget and time frame, with delegating work and overseeing the post-production process to ensure an adequate final product.

Tell us what inspired the story behind your new movie, Blacksmith (Alagbede)

My road to becoming a producer of Blacksmith “Alagbede” started from the day my partner and actress, Jaiye Kuti came up with the story even though I had a different story in mind. When reviewing a script to decide whether I want to be involved with the production of the movie, I look for several qualities, including the clarity of the storyline, how well the characters are developed, whether the script is unique, and how complex the story may be. I also think about how I would go about casting the film and what changes would need to be made to the script to make the production feasible and cost-effective. However, Blacksmith Alagbede possessed the qualities I look forward to, hence it’s production.

How did you choose the director for this project?

Since the director is a key figure for any project, I consider their experience, passion, and cultural fit when making a hire. Over time, I’ve realised it’s important to find a director who matches my personality so that we can have a good working relationship going forward. Then, I review their work experience and determine if it aligns with my project’s needs. Even though as an executive producer, it is impossible for me to control every aspect of the production, however, I made sure that the proper people are hired to perform the tasks required to bring the project to fruition.

What were some of the most difficult issues you experienced during production?

I could list several problems, but the major problem was going over budget. When we ran out of budget, I was struggling between compromising the quality of the production or staying on schedule, I opted for sourcing more funds to ensure a high-quality standard production and a satisfying outcome of the project.

How did you go about casting the major parts in the film?

I ensured the proper people were cast for their roles, strictly making sure their charges fall within the budget. The casts for the major parts of the movie were A-list actors whose faces are being sought for on the big screens and they all ate their roles and left no crumbs.

What themes or messages do you want the viewers to take away from the movie?

There are so many things for the viewers to take away, but for me, I’d say I want the viewers to learn contentment, patience, self-confidence, discipline, hard work, consistency, and reward.

How did you manage the budget and resources necessary to complete this project?

Honestly, we had to be strict with certain decisions we took so we didn’t go over the budget. Also, we cut down on some costs and worked with a team whose prices fit into our budget.

What qualities do you believe are essential for a successful executive producer?

The idea of success varies for different people. However, I think to be successful, you need to have background knowledge of the industry, budget management skills, problem-solving skills, creativity, networking, communication and financial capability.

How do you balance the creative and business aspects of your job?

It can be difficult to strike a balance between both but I set very clear goals and stayed organised according to the plan. I collaborated with another well-known producer, Jaye Kuti who made the production seamless and made sure we stayed true to my vision.

How has the audience responded to The Blacksmith so far, and did it match your expectations?

I can only remain grateful to the Almighty for the positive reviews so far. The feedback has been awesome and viewers are happy. The public review and feedback are not less than my expectations, I knew I did a good job and I’m only happy to see it appreciated by many.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career so far?

The most rewarding aspect of my career was the ability to turn my passion into reality. Not many are able to live their dreams, so I am really glad I was able to turn mine into a reality.

What advice would you give to upcoming producers who want to make an impact in the film industry?

As an upcoming producer or executive producer, you must be passionate, dedicated, hardworking, strict, flexible and financially capable.
