Israel-Gaza war: Everyone a loser – Palestinian Ambassador

The Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, Abdullah Mohammed Shawesh, has said the war on Gaza by Israel should be immediately put to an end as no one is a loser or winner.

He said this on Wednesday in Abuja at a media roundtable organised by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).

The ongoing war in Gaza, which has seen the deaths of almost 20,000 people, mostly women and children, including journalists and aid workers, started on October 7 after Hamas launched what has been described as the biggest and most unexpected attack against Israel in years.

“In this war, all of us are losers, but Israel is a bigger loser. It would be a mistake to treat the ongoing hostilities as an Israel/Palestine problem. The entire world is interconnected, and what affects one affects all,” Shawesh stated.

He said while the Palestinians are not seeking the support of anyone in the ongoing attack on Gaza, but it is fair that Palestine’s position be heard.

“The international community should ensure peace returns to Gaza and Palestine. All resolutions at the UN concerning Palestine should be enforced. And no more lip service should be paid to decisions taken concerning Palestine.”

Explaining why he said Israel is a bigger loser in the ongoing war, Shawesh said the original plan of Israel to exterminate Palestine is yet unachieved and can never be achieved.

He also said since the start of the present hostilities, Israel has not been able to get any hostages released, noting that it is time for the Israeli forces to lay down their arms and come to the table for a resolution of the age-long crisis.

Daily Trust reports that the NSCIA, in a statement on the ongoing war, called for an immediate stop to the siege of Gaza, insisting that the attack by Hamas on Israel was reactionary.

The Palestinian envoy added that the world has abandoned Palestine once again against the age-long atrocities of the Israelis.

He also berated the international community for hypocrisy as the war in Gaza continues.

When asked why the Palestinians are calling for 25 per cent of the historical land to establish the Palestinian State when it had rejected 45 per cent in the past, Shawesh said the Palestinians acted naturally and against injustice.

He also said that Israel has repeatedly denied the return of Palestinian refugees displaced during the wars, despite resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
