Islamic school teacher beaten, detained for punishing student in Abuja

An Islamic school teacher has been beaten up and detained by the police for punishing a female student in Abuja.

Daily Trust learnt that the teacher had punished a 12-year-old female student during a lesson session.

It was after the student reported the matter to her family that three of her siblings teamed up and whipped the teacher mercilessly.

The siblings nearly knocked down the teacher, who was leaving the school premises, with a car they were driving in and when he turned to raise concerns, they descended on him.

A teacher at the school told our correspondent that; “the female student blocked the cane with her hands and refused to allow the teacher to punish her.

“After the student reported the matter to her family, her father sauntered to the school and engaged the teacher in a heated argument.

“The next day, three of her siblings, who were former students of the school, arrived at the school and whipped up the teacher mercilessly.”

An eyewitness, who spoke to Daily Trust in confidence, said that the teacher, Sanusi, reported the matter to the police in the area, who asked him to return the next day.

“When the teacher and one of his friends returned to the police station the next day, they were detained for allegedly inflicting a fracture on the hand of the student,” he said.

Daily Trust gathered that the family bandaged the hand of the student and lied to the police that she suffered a simple fracture in the course of the punishment.

A doctor at a hospital uncovered the plot, which led to the dismissal of the allegation.

When contacted, the DPO of Kubwa police station confirmed the report.

He said the two parties had withdrawn the case.

Some people familiar with the case, who spoke told Daily Trust said that the teacher had nearly been transferred to the police headquarters in Abuja from where he would be taken to court.

They said it took the intervention of some community and religious leaders in the area to convince the police that the teacher was innocent.

A leader in the Association of Islamiyya Schools in Kubwa said they are yet to decide whether the girl will be admitted to any school in Kubwa.

Imam condemns the act

In his Jumaat sermon last week, the Chief Imam of Badr Mosque in Kuwba, Imam Khalid, condemned the act.

Sheikh Khalid warned parents against treating Islamiyya teachers with such sacrilege.

He said no teacher deserves such maltreatment let alone an Islamiyya school teacher.

Khalid said, “These people receive only a monthly token from us, but give their lives to train our children.

“It is sad that this is how some of us decide to pay them back.

“Whosoever wants his ward to be blessed by Allah the Almighty will never raise his voice against an Islamiyya school teacher, let alone send his children to beat him.”
