Islamic leaders, CAN pledge peaceful coexistence in Ogun

The League of Imams and Alfas and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Ogun State have pledged to live in peace and harmony in the state.

The leaders of the two religions made the pledge on Wednesday when a delegation of the League of Imams and Alfas submitted a condolence letter over the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, to the state CAN chairman, Bishop Tunde Akin-Akinsanya, in Abeokuta.

The Secretary-General of the League of Imams and Alfas, Sheikh Tajudeen Adewunmi, who led the Islamic clerics, assured Christians of the state of peaceful co-existence, saying there is no justification to invade a place of worship and attack worshippers in the name of religion.

Responding, the CAN chairman lauded the league for the gesture, saying that Christians would not mistake the attackers for Muslims.

He said, “They are our enemies. They are not Muslims. You hardly see any family without the two religions, but, it is unfortunate that such a thing happened. The attack came from our arch enemies.

“In my own family, I even have someone that was next to the Chief Imam in Ijebuland before he died – my older brother — same father and same mother and we were close.

“These attackers are neither Muslims nor Christians. They cannot find a place where people are asked to kill others in the Qur’an or Bible; it means they are satanic.”
