Investment in Nigeria’s basic education key to achieving SDG 4 by 2030

The Senior Technical Adviser to the office of Senior Special Adviser to President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Bala Yusuf Yinusa has said investment in basic education is critical to the achievement of SDG before 2030.

He stated this during a stakeholders’ meeting between the Universal Basic Education Commission, (UBEC) and the Organised Private Sector Group, focused on the implementation of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Programme in Nigeria, held in Lagos.

He, however, stressed that lack of funds has been a major setback undermining the advancement of basic education, adding that funds from the public sector are insufficient to sustain high learning quality.

Also, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Hamid Bobboyi said the burgeoning increase in enrolment is faced with the poor infrastructure and capacity to deliver proper learning outcomes.

He urged both state and local governments to wake up to their responsibilities of providing funds for the growth of basic education.

He hinted that the federal government block grant of not less than 2% of its Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) is insufficient to meet the demand for the country’s basic education, hoping for the National Assembly to act fast on the bill, seeking to push the grant to close to 4 percent.
