Internal auditors in Nigeria have stressed the need for them to be independent in order to stem the tide of corruption and mismanagement of public funds.
The Forum of Heads of Internal Audit of Federal Tertiary Health Institutions met in Calabar and recommended that internal auditors in government institutions be engaged and reported to the accountant general of the federation in order to give the level of Independence to fight corruption in the country.
The forum held its annual summit with the theme “Corruption, a Cancer in the Society” from November 9 to 12 in Calabar.
In a communique signed by its chairman, Dr Jackson Okpachui, they canvassed for a robust internal control system in all government establishments to mitigate and minimise mismanagement and opportunities for corruption.
