According to the organisers of the event, only athletes who are below 16 years would be eligible to compete.
Oghoghorie said he was motivated to float the championship to arrest the steady decline in school athletics.
“AISSAC would bring back the school athletics buzz in Nigeria as well as keep the youths engaged with a view to deter them from engaging in social vices,” he said.
Saying that he expects the competition to go national in the next 10 years, Oghoghorie maintained that AISSAC would be like the Jamaica Inter-Secondary Schools Boys and Girls Championship that produced the likes of Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake among others.
The former sports prefect at St Gregory’s College, Ikoyi, Lagos and former athletics captain at University of Kent in the United Kingdom stressed that with an innovation such as AISSAC, athletics can be made attractive to students in Nigeria where football is the dominant sport.
He concluded that the Abuja Inter Secondary Schools Athletics Championship will also bring together students to compete and ignite the love for the sport among them.
