Insurgency: 203 Youths empowered into Poultry Farming, others in Adamawa

Arewa Development Support Initiative (ADSI), a non-governmental organization (NGO) established to combat the negative issues plaguing the North, has successfully empowered 203 youths in Adamawa State.

Zubaida Basheer, the Acting Coordinator of ADSI in Adamawa, disclosed this during the launch event for the empowerment of 40 youths affected by insurgency, banditry, and economic hardship in the state.

The objective of the program is to promote diversity in business by providing training and support to the people affected by insurgency, banditry and economic meltdown.

Basheer explained that the focus of this year’s program is to empower 40 youths in Adamawa, with the state chapter taking charge of the initiative.

The program is centered on poultry farming, particularly the rearing of chicks, turkeys, and small ruminants like goats.

The organization has given starter packs consisting of drinkers, feeders, chick and turkey feeds, and ruminant feeds to the beneficiaries.

Furthermore, to ensure commitment from the beneficiaries, ADSI has created a revolving initiative, in which every beneficiary must have a guarantor.

Through the guarantor, ADSI will collect 2 seedlings from every beneficiary.

“For ruminants, the time to submit them back to the organization is after six months, when they have produced. For turkeys and chicks, two will be submitted back to the organization when they have reached table size. This is to promote a revolving system that creates more opportunities for others, making the cycle continuous,” she said.

In addition, ADSI Adamawa initiated its first empowerment program in 2021, which trained 163 beneficiaries in various skills such as bread-making, catering, leather works, shoe-making, ICT, and poultry farming on the 29th of August 2021.

Basheer expressed her appreciation to the founder, Dr. Khuraira Musa, and the management team for their support of ADSI in Adamawa State, which made the day a reality.

She said the organization’s funding source is through monthly contributions of at least N2,000 from women across Northern Nigeria.

The funds are utilized to support women and youths affected by insurgency, banditry, and other challenges, bringing succor to those in need.
