The Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Ahmed Iliyasu in charge of Zone 2 Command, has called on police officers of his command to return to duty post in Lagos and Ogun states.
This, he said, was to ensure adequate security before, during and after the yuletide.
He made the call yesterday during a workshop at the Nigeria Police Force Zone 2, Onikan in Lagos.
Iliyasu also urged all police officers to put the #EndSARS protest behind them in the spirit of nationhood.
He appealed to them to go back and correct the negative perception which Nigerian youths have about police officers and policing.
“We must have a change of attitude to our duty and put the people as the centre point of our policing,” he said.
He emphasized that policing strategy should be people-centred, satisfactory to the people and good enough to remove the fear and uncertainty in the mind of the people anytime they have contact with the police.
A security expert, Eno Ekhomu, said the wanton destruction and looting that followed the EndSARS protest were was not targeted at the police.
Ekhomu said the police only bore the brunt of governance issues ranging from the poor remuneration of police, youth unemployment, hunger, poverty, anger and inequality, which are not under the control of the police.
