A former governor of Imo State and senator representing Imo West, Rochas Okorocha, has advocated constitutional roles for traditional rulers as a solution to Nigeria’s security challenges.

He said government alone could not fight the problem, hence the need for citizens to support the fight.

The senator also advocated inter-tribal marriage and sustenance of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme to promote national unity.

The former two-term governor and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) spoke Thursday at an annual public lecture organised by the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) in Kano.

Okorocha, who was represented by the General Manager of the National Theatre, Professor Sunny Ododo, said, “If we want to end the security challenges of this country, we must recognise traditional institutions constitutionally for their role in our societies.

“Nigeria is blessed with diverse cultural heritages, with over 200 ethnic groups, which I see as our strength. Unfortunately, we have not been able to utilise it to our advantage due to ethnic rivalry.”
