Umar Sadiq has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.

The player will undergo surgical treatment and could be sidelined for the rest of the season.  Sadiq now faces potentially 7-9 months in recovery.

He sustained the injury in the first half of Real Sociedad’s 2-1 defeat at Getafe and was replaced by France forward, Mohamed-Ali Cho in the 38th minute.

After the game, Sociedad coach, Imanol Alguacil sounded worried saying, “The image was ugly, but we have to wait for the tests,”.

The club confirmed the fears in a statement yesterday whilst wishing the player a speedy recovery.

“He suffered a twist in his right knee during the Getafe-RS match, held yesterday, 09-11-2022.

“The MRI done this morning shows a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. It is a subsidiary lesion of surgical treatment. In the next few days, he will start treatment with physiotherapy and personalised work.”

Last season, he caught the eyes of some top clubs in Europe after scoring 18 goals and registering 9 assists to help Almeria secure promotion. He started the season well, scoring 3 goals in 5 games in La Liga with one coming in his debut against Atletico Madrid and a Europa League debut at Old Trafford.

A spell on the sidelines will see him miss Nigeria’s upcoming international friendly against Algeria on September 27, against Portugal in November and most of the AFCON qualifiers.
