The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should comply with provisions of the 1999 Constitution on constituency creation in states of the country, members of the House of Representatives said yesterday.
INEC, according to the lawmakers, has failed to implement provisions of sections 112, 113 and 114 of the 1999 constitution, which all talk about streamlining the number of seats in state assemblies based on the number of seats in the House of Representatives.
The House, in a motion sponsored by Rep Francis Charles Uduyok (PDP, Akwa Ibom), called on the electoral commission to urgently commence the creation of additional state constituencies in the affected states.
“The constitutional provision which makes it mandatory that a State House of Assembly shall consist of three or four times the number of seats which the state has in the House of Representatives, is not being complied with,” said Rep Uduyok.
In passing the motion, the House equally enjoined all relevant government agencies to cooperate towards ensuring the creation of the additional constituencies in all the affected states of the country.
