INEC seeks modern laws for council polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for the enactment of new and modern laws for the smooth conduct of local government elections in the country.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the call on Thursday in Abuja at a meeting between INEC and the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON).

Apparently reacting to call for the abolition of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIECs), Yakubu also said that the SIECs derived their mandates from the same section of the Constitution that INEC derives its mandate from.
