The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Mrs Akon Eyakenyi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the winner of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District election.

The Returning Officer, Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, said Mrs Akon Eyakenyi polled 122,412 votes to defeat the sitting senator, Nelson Effiong of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party who polled 44,053 votes.

Ndaeyo commended INEC for conducting free, fair and credible elections, saying the election was well organised by the commission.

He alleged that some politicians were trying to thwart the efforts of the commission.

“The election was very organised but in bringing results from the local government areas, it took a little time for us to collate the results,” he said.

In her response, Mrs Akon Eyakenyi promised to give effective representation to her constituents in the Senatorial District.
