The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe State, Alhaji Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya as winner of March 9 gubernatorial election held in the state.
The state Returning officer, Professor Saminu Abdulrahman Ibrahim, Vice Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi said the APC candidate polled a total of 364,179 votes to returned elected.
He defeated his main challenger, Senator Usman Bayero Nafada of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who scored a total of 222, 868 votes and 30 other governorship candidates who altogether scored 21,799 votes.
“I, Professor Saminu I Abdulrahman, hereby certify that Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” the returning officer declared.
Our correspondent reports that Inuwa Yahaya of APC won in 10 out of the 11 LGAs of the state with a margin of 141,311 votes against PDP’s Bayero who won only Nafada LGA.
The victory of Inuwa Yahaya has ended the 16 years of PDP rule in the state. The party has been in power since 2003 when Muhammad Danjuma Goje wrested power from late Governor Abubakar Habu Hashidu of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
