The Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, has called for the reintroduction of indigenous languages in the nation’s education curriculum.

In his address during the inauguration of the organising committtee for the 10th Nupe Day celebration slated for June 26 , 2018 at his Wadata Palace in Bida at the weekend, the Etsu said such gesture would be an antidote to the near extinction of indigenous languages.

“Indigenous languages are facing extinction due to the unbridled influence of foreign languages among the people. It is so worrisome that children no longer understand their mother tongues,” he said.

He challenged the committee to include speaking of Nupe language for at least 10 minutes without injection of English or Hausa languages as part of the competition during the celebration.

The chairman of the committee, Alhaji M.T. Mamman, assured Etsu Nupe of a hitch-free celebration.

The Nupe Day committee has Mallam Ibrahim Akanya as Secretary, while Isah Isah Mohammed will be the Assistant Secretary respectively.
