The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, his Deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu yesterday called on Nigerians to pray and cooperate with the federal government to ensure the nation come out from the economic recession stronger, more united, developed and self-reliant.
In separate messages to mark this year’s independence anniversary, they commended Nigerians, especially the nation’s founding fathers, for their contributions towards nationhood. Saraki in his message, expressed regret that in her 56 years of existence, Nigeria’s economy still depends on only oil, a situation which created the present economic problems being experienced. In his message signed by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu, Senator Ekweremadu called for sober reflection and return to the path of true federalism.
Also, a former Vice president Atiku Abubakar yesterday in his independence anniversary message, said it was time to lend a helping hand to one another and form a formidable coalition to push back the recession. He noted that Nigeria was marking her 56th birthday at a time of turbulent economic crisis but expressed optimism that the country shall overcome the current challenges.
