The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has congratulated the Nigerian government and citizens on the occasion of the 61st Independence anniversary.
The Russian leader, in a congratulatory message to President Muhammadu Buhari, reiterated commitment to promoting stronger security and stability on the African continent.

“I am convinced that further development of the traditionally friendly relations between Russia and Nigeria fully accords with the interests of our peoples and promotes stronger security and stability on the African continent.
“I wish you good health and success, as I wish all Nigerian citizens peace and prosperity,” Putin said.
Also, Valentina Matvienko, the Speaker of the Russian parliament, in a message to Nigerian Senate President Ahmad Lawan, felicitated with Nigerian people as the country marks its 61st Independence anniversary.
He said, “Relations between our countries, traditionally open and respectful in character, are based on the mutual aspiration towards a stronger partnership in the political sphere, trade and economy, cultural and humanitarian areas.
“Today, we actively implement joint projects in energy and mineral resources development, work together in infrastructure and industry and promote military cooperation.”
