Plateau State was created out of then Benue-Plateau state on February 3, 1976 by late Murtala Mohammed. The state consisted of 17 area councils. They are; Jos North, Jos South, Jos East, Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Riyom, Bokkos, Kanke, Mangu. Pankshin, Kanem, Langtang North, Langtang South, Qua’an-Pan, Shendam, Mikang and Wase.
There are over 50 tribes in Plateau State. The first seven in order of numerical strength are; Berom, Mwagavul, Tarok, Angas, Jarawa, Bassa and Tiv. Tiv-speaking populations are found in Langtang South, Shendam, Qua’an-Pan and Wase area councils.
Nigeria must formulate new approach to road maintenance
Since it is an established fact that Tiv are indigenes of Plateau State, they should no longer be excluded in the scheme of things in the state.
Tiv involvement will help in checking and correcting the imbalance against them that have existed for a very long time.
Tiv people who are indigenes of the state should therefore be allowed to hold elective and appointive positions in the state and for the state at the national and international levels.
