The Centre for Media, Policy and Accountability (CMPA), has charged the governors across 36 States of the federation as well as Chairmen in 774 local government areas to implement the ruling of the Supreme Court as soon as possible.
The centre specifically said this judgment aligns with the core principles of federalism by delineating the separation of powers among the federal, state and local governments, adding that its implementation would serve people at the grassroots better.
Executive Director of the Centre, Dr Suleiman Suleiman, who stated this during the weekend in a statement issued by the Communications Officer of the Centre, Ms Princess Ahante, described the ruling as a victory for democratic governance and the rule of law.
Daily Trust had reported how the apex court in its ruling delivered by a seven-member panel led by Justice Emmanuel Agim, on Thursday directed state governments not to tamper with the allocations of the local government areas again.

“This ruling is a victory for democratic governance and the rule of law. It empowers local governments to independently manage their resources and fulfil their mandate to deliver essential services to the communities they serve.
“We applaud the Supreme Court for its progressive interpretation of the law and its commitment to upholding constitutional provisions,” Dr Suleiman was quoted to have said in the statements issued by Ms Ahante.
He added, “Local government autonomy is essential for true federalism and sustainable development. It is imperative that all stakeholders, including state governments and local councils, work collaboratively to implement this ruling effectively.
