Less than 72 hours after the Federal Government granted financial autonomy to local governments in Nigeria, lawmakers in Imo State on Thursday suspended all the elected chairmen of the 27 Local Government Areas of the state.
The action of the lawmakers followed the refusal of the chairmen to appear before the house to answer questions on the financial standing of their respective local governments.
Member representing Nkwerre state constituency, Chika Madumere, moved the motion for the immediate suspension of the chairmen, a motion that and was unanimously supported by all the lawmakers seated at the plenary.
According to him, by failing to appear before the lawmakers, the chairmen exhibited lack of respect for, and also undermined the legislature.
