Academic Forum of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria has called for justice over the recent killing of leading cleric in the movement, Shaikh Qasim Umar Sokoto by the Nigeria Police.
In a statement signed by its spokesman, S.I Ahmad on Thursday, the forum said Umar Sokoto has been part of the members protesting the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife.
Zakzaky was arrested by the Nigerian Army between December 12 and 14, 2015 following the confrontation with the sect, which to the death of scores of members.
“Shaikh Qasim Umar was among the devoted Muslims that embark on this peaceful protest that has been going on for more than two years in various places across the country,” he said.
“Unfortunately, the police that are supposed to protect people from harm, shot Shaikh Qasim Umar and eventually he attained martyrdom after been hospitalized for some weeks,” the statement concluded.
