The Bishop of Lagos North Diocese of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Reverend Gboyega Ohu, has described the Ijebu-Ode/Sagamu axis of the Sagamu/Benin/Ore expressway as a deathtrap.
Ohu said the road has become deplorable and caused a series of accidents that have claimed human lives.
The clergyman spoke during the 19th annual thanksgiving service held at Baptist International Worship Center, aka Abraham’s Tabernacle, in Sagamu, Ogun State.
The annual event organized by the Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, was themed “Thanking God for total victory, recovery and restoration.”

In his sermon, Ohu lamented the state of the road, saying hoodlums now take advantage of bad portions of the road to carry out robbery and kidnap road users.
“Ijebu-Ode/Sagamu road is now a deathtrap and unfortunately it is a very Federal Government Road,” he told the congregation.
He asked Daniel to urgently take up the challenge by ensuring the Federal Government fixes the road to safeguard lives and property of the users.
Speaking with newsmen, Ohu said “The Ijebu-Ode/Sagamu road is very bad… the long stretch of the road leading to Ore, the road on the axis of Ore had been fixed and it’s okay. But down to this area (referring to Sagamu), the road is very bad. There are too many potholes and while plying the road you will see a number of trucks by the roadside due to accidents suffered because of bad roads.
“I want to plead with the government at all levels to look into that road.
“Also, security in that area, men of the underworld are operating there because vehicles will have to slow down before the driver can navigate some portions of the road. Kidnappers are operating in that area.”
Also speaking, the Minority Leader, Ogun State House of Assembly, Lukman Adeleye, admitted that the road has become a deathtrap, but assured the state assembly would call attention of Governor Dapo Abiodun to the deplorable state of the road and the need to fix it forthwith.
“We are going to pick it up from here as a legislator and representative of the people to make sure that we mobilise all stakeholders including members of the National Assembly from the axis and push for the government to fix the road.
“As a state lawmaker, we will also call the governor to it so that we can jointly put hands to fix the challenges. We understand that the road has become a deathtrap, and we are going to respond to it,” Adeleye said.
Responding, Daniel informed the gathering that allocation had been made to cater for the road in this year’s budget.
The former governor promised to ensure implementation of the budget as it affects repairs of the road.
