The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris on Monday said a special dedicated forensic and cybercrime unit would be established to check the menace of cybercrimes in Nigeria.
He made this known in Abuja while declaring open a two days training workshop on cybercrimes forensic investigation for officers of the Nigerian Police Force in partnership with Justice for All.
IGP Idris, who was represented by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Intelligence, Umar Shehu said apart from setting up a dedicated Forensic and Cybercrime Unit, the police is going to continue to educate its rank and file on ICT.
The IGP noted that perhaps more worrisome is the radicalization and violent extremism perpetrated through the cyberspace, website hacking and defacement.
He said due to increasing internet speed, crime can be committed instantaneously without the victim feeling the impact until much later.
He said the cybercrimes workshop is to look into scientific police investigation process, tools and techniques for tackling cybercrimes.
He added that it is also to look into how to conduct reactive and proactive internet investigation; social media and its role for law enforcement and policing cyber terrorism attributed to terrorist organizations.
