Ibadan agog as arch-rivals storm city for 2022 polo tourney

Perennial rivals in Nigerian polo, Kano, Kaduna and Lagos are set to rekindle their rivalry for dominance as the prestigious 2022 Ibadan Polo Tournament gallops off in grand style, Monday, May 16 with over 20 teams vying for honours.

For decades, the trio has been locked in perpetual rivalry at major tournaments across the country, with Lagos and Kano having an upper hand but the high riding Kaduna contingent who are still smarting from their Niger Delta victory last January have said there is no stopping them in Ibadan 2022 rumbles.

Polo Royals report that Guard Polo Club from Abuja and Port Harcourt Polo Club are the other major clubs expected to vie for honours in the tourney that is billed to climax May 22, 2022.

Jos Red Crown would be making their second attempt at winning their first major polo title in Ibadan.

Ibadan polo President, Koyinsola Owoeye told Polo Royals in an exclusive chat that arrangements are in top gear to ensure that a grand event that will linger for long in the memories of all participants, invited guests and enthusiasts of the noble game is staged.

The highly revered Ibadan Cup presented in the early 1930s by Colonel R. Petit of the 9th Lancer of the then British colonial masters remains the biggest prize at stake.

Others are the Rotimi Cup, Ade Alakija Cup played in memory of the former Ibadan Polo Captain, and The GOC Cup, The GOC Cup as well as a handful selected prizes and individual awards.
