A former Minister of Youth and Sports and one-time Governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo has said that he would never have been Governor without the Rangers International Football Club of Enugu.
Nwobodo, who spoke at the grand reception for the 2018 AITEO Cup Champions at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium during the weekend, described the club’s recent achievement as “the miracle of Asaba” made possible because “Governor Ugwuanyi handed Enugu State into the hands of God.”
“I wouldn’t have been governor without Rangers. I was their first Chairman. The Rangers made me their chairman and from then on, it was success, success and success. When it was time for politics, Zik [Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe] called me and said you have contributed a lot for the Rangers. You have done a lot for your people. You are the type of person the people want to lead them.
“Sadly, 32 years after I left office as Governor, Rangers failed and failed until another Governor whose name is Ifeanyichukwu came into office and broke the jinx. I was very happy to see him turn the table again in favour of Rangers,” Nwobodo recalled.
Also, Nwobodo said that the Enugu State Governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has restored the dignity of Rangers International, and lauded him for his commitment and contributions to the uncommon feats recorded by the Rangers International Football Club of Enugu in lifting the 2015/2016 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) trophy and 2018 AITEO Cup after 32 years and 35 years, respectively.
The politician, who recalled how he became Governor of old Anambra State through his passion and support for Enugu Rangers, said that football is a unifying factor for all segments of the society and stressed that Rangers’ outstanding performance under Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration has united everybody in the state.
