A Technical Director of the last board of Gymnastics Federation of Nigeria (GFN), Coach Anthony Asuquo, has vowed to continue to discover and promote talents in the country despite the dissolution of the board.

Coach Asuquo, the Head Coach of Tony International Gymnastics (TIG), an organisation that discovers and develops talents, has discovered and groomed several talents who have gone on to represent and win laurels for Nigeria in international events.

He said the federation made exploits under the watch of the last board of the federation.

Coach Asuquo, in a letter of appreciation, following the dissolution of the GFN’s board last week, said it had been success stories in the last four years.

“It is with great enthusiasm, fulfilment and absolute success recorded during our tenure as board members of the Gymnastics Federation of Nigeria that I want to appreciate you all for the supports,” he said.

He said there have been “success stories from the Youth All African Games in Algeria, the African Games in Morocco, Club meet in South Africa and World Championship Germany. All these ended with tangible results.”

Coach Asuquo thanked everyone in the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports for their endless support toward him as the Technical Representative of the GFN.

“Posterity will not be kind to me if I fail to appreciate the former sports minister, Solomon Selcap Dalung, whose encouragement enabled me to sail on during troubling times.

“To my amiable President, now the Caretaker Chairman of GFN, Prince Kelvin Ehurunwunse, you are indeed a father. I will continue to do my best to promote and discover good athletes for Nigeria,” he said.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, had dissolved the sports federations’ boards and constituted caretaker committees last week.

This is in keeping with the Olympic charter which stipulates a four-year tenure for all sports federations’ boards.

In order to ensure continuity in the administration of the federations, caretaker committees have been put in place to manage the affairs of the federations until elections are conducted and the new boards inaugurated.
