Commonwealth Games: I want to finish strong, says Tobi Amusan after qualifying for 100m hurdles

World record holder of the women’s 100m hurdles, Oluwatobi Amusan, says she wants to finish strong.

She said this after qualifying for the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth games in Birmingham.

Starting in lane three, Amusan took off with a perfect start, maintaining the lead from the rest of the runners and eventually clocking in at 12.40 at the finish line.

She finished well ahead of Australia’s Michelle Jenneke and Canada’s Michelle Harrison who finished third in 12.85 seconds.

“The mental part is there and the physical part is also done. But I’ve been so exhausted after those championships. I’m just trying to hang in there and finish the season strong,” Radio France International quoted her to have said.

Just last month, Amusan ran 12.12 seconds therefore, shattering the women’s world record in 100m hurdles in Oregon, USA, breaking USA’s Kendra Harrison’s record of 12.20 set in London 2016.

The World Record holder goes against the likes of Michelle Jenneke of Australia, England’s Cindy Sembre, Danielle Williams and Jamaican duo Danielle Williams and Megan Tapper.

The 25-year-old is now faced with the challenge of defending her Commonwealth Games title, which she won in the 2018 edition of the competition in Gold Coast, Australia.

Amusan will compete on Sunday at 10:25am in the Women’s 100m hurdles final at the Alexander Arena in Birmingham, with her being the favourite to take home the gold medal.
