‘I stole baby just to be called a mother’

A 30-year-old woman, Sukyama Irmiya, has said that she stole an eight-month-old baby from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBU-TH), Bauchi, just for people to call her a mother.

Speaking to newsmen after being paraded at the Bauchi State Police Command, Sukyama said, “I came to Bauchi to see a doctor. I went to the teaching hospital to see a doctor, but later changed my mind because of the condition I found myself in.

“I thought that even if I met the doctor, it is all about child bearing and I don’t have a husband because I was chased out of my marriage.

“I then went into a ward and stole a child. I stole the child because I really want it; I want to take care of it as my own child; that was the reason I went for a newborn.”

She further said, “I am like a walking corpse. I am ready to die now, but I demand total forgiveness from God and everyone hurt by my actions. If I find forgiveness from the parents of the baby, I will be very grateful to God.”
