Why are you into this business?
I do it to earn some money to support my family.
How about your husband?
My husband alone cannot support my family. He is trying but I have to help out too. But, I’m doing this to also fight boredom. Most times, I’m home all alone with my three children. Sleeping every day and waking up could be boring, so I decided to start trading in front of the house.
How do you handle family demands and the business?
This is a small business. I can even be inside and when buyers come, they call me. It does not affect my family. As you can see, it’s in front of my house and I display my wares when my husband goes out for work and, most times, I finish selling them before he comes back.
How profitable is the business?
As I said, the business is to keep me busy. It’s not really to make much money but I can’t deny that I make some profits. I buy from the farmers themselves. I then cut them and sell a piece for N20. I make about N15,000 to N20,000 profits per month.
How does your family benefit from the income?
My family benefits a lot. Though it’s not enough to pay school fees or even do major things but I buy little things needed in the home. I don’t have to always wait for my husband before I can buy some things I need, especially cooking things. I can buy salt and pepper without waiting for my husband to come and give me money. May be he is even very far away and I don’t have to wait for him to come back before cooking.
Are there other women in this community who do petty business as you do?
Yes, there are. But we are not many. Most times, some of our women prefer to do nothing, hoping that their husbands will shoulder the burdens alone.
What advice do you have for such women who rely on their husbands to meet all their needs?
What advice do I have for them apart from telling them to emulate me? They should look at me. It’s not always about the money. It’s about keeping yourself busy. Staying idle does not help anybody. You don’t have to go to the big market before you can start something. You can start in front of your house just like me. And you don’t even need much money. I started my business with just N500 and I make over N15,000 profits every month.
