A 40-year-old woman in Osogbo, Osun State, Elizabeth Aderibigbe, who battered her niece has claimed that she did so because the 14-year-old girl, Adesewa, stole food.

But Adesewa said her sister did not give her food and that she stole food because she was hungry.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun State Command, arrested Aderibigbe for beating and inflicting injury on the girl.

The NSCDC media officer, Atanda Olabisi, told newsmen that the woman treated her niece cruelly and that there were marks all over Adesewa’s body as a result of beating.

Atanda said the girl has since been taken away from her aunt, treated and handed over to her grandmother to take care of her henceforth.

He said “While examining Adesewa’s body, beating marks and wounds were seen and Adesewa confessed that she stole her food when she was hungry. She said her aunty always beat her with wire and cane.”

The NSCDC Head of Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Onifade Clement, advised parents against releasing their wards to relatives or strangers who would maltreat them.

The state commandant, Ocheja Emmanuel, also called on parents to take good care of their wards. He advised residents to also always report any act of abuse.
