Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned campaigns of calumny against a former governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, by “powerful political forces” concerning his integrity and reputation.
Addressing the media on Wednesday in Abuja, the National coordinator of the group, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the intention of fabricating false scandals and strategic media campaigns launched to tarnish the image of Ugwuanyi were motivated by ulterior motives.
He extolled Ugwuanyi’s commitment to good governance, infrastructural development, healthcare, and education in the state, which has left a lasting positive impact on the lives of the people.
According to him, the former governor’s leadership was marked by transparency, inclusiveness, and a deep dedication to the welfare of the citizens.

He said: “Ugwuanyi made significant promises to the people of Enugu State, and he lived up to many of them. For instance, he promised to open Nsukka, the university town where the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), is situated.
“True to his words, he embarked on several development projects for the university town. The Opi-Nsukka Road and the construction of a secretariat annexe at Edeoballa to house state civil servants working in the Enugu North senatorial zone are just a few examples.
“However, despite these significant achievements, there are some who still question the extent of Governor Ugwuanyi’s contributions to the state. It’s worth noting that no government can meet all the diverse needs and expectations of its citizens. Nevertheless, the accomplishments of his administration are undeniable.”
HURIWA added that Ugwuanyi was also worker-friendly, ensuring the prompt payment of salaries and other entitlements to civil servants.
“Therefore, these sinister plots and politically motivated allegations against him are not only baseless but also part of a deliberate effort by certain individuals to tarnish his image.
“We believe that these individuals are acting out of self-interest and fear that Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi may be considered for a significant political appointment from President Tinubu.
“Their actions are driven by partisan politics and a desire to undermine a public servant who has earned the trust and respect of the people of Enugu State,” the group added.
